Originally a part of Dawson’s Department Store, Maxwell’s Café Bar was completed in 2002 and has since enjoyed success as a popular venue for locals and tourists alike.
Since opening, Maxwells has expanded to include a heated outdoor seating area and an open-air roof terrace, providing customers the opportunity to make the most of the summer months.
Here at Maxwells we strive to provide a relaxed, friendly atmosphere complemented by fine wines, great food and excellent service.
I had a great time at Maxwells! A friend and I visited when we still weren’t allowed to sit indoors (couple of weeks ago) so we sat on the roof… read more terrace and it was fabulous! Fully covered, with heaters for when it got a bit chilly, what is there to complain about? The food was delicious also, and we very much enjoyed our drinks (would very much recommend the cocktail pitchers). The service was good; the staff had it running like clockwork and were being very covid-conscious. It was a wonderful night out all round!
One thing to note: if you’re going to make the bathrooms a one in one out rule, then I’d suggest stopping groups of girls from going in all at once to take photos with each other. I didn’t care but others might.
My friends and I attended Maxwell’s yesterday for Christmas lunch, everything was just perfect from the crackers on the table to the delicious food, every course was outstanding, plus superb… read more value for money. The waitresses were all lovely and attentive especially Alliyah.
Thank you for a great afternoon enjoyed by six lovely friends.
Stars ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ We will return.

This was my third visit. The first time was very good. The second time, I sat in view of the kitchen. I saw a young man eating something from an… read more oven tray and wiping the food with a tea towel. I gave them the benefit of the doubt as the food was quite good and front of house staff friendly. On my third visit, I saw the a girl behind the bar clean out something from a cup with her fingers, which she then put on a tray to serve to someone. She was then scratching her hair quite a lot. I then saw her take out a new bottle of gin, she couldn’t remove the plastic from over the lid so used her teeth to remove it. I’m afraid this was the last straw so I won’t be doing back.
We visited today for the first time and ordered 2 different lunch meals . Have to say both meals were delicious the service is excellent and very friendly, needless to… read more say we will be back next time we are in Clitheroe
I hadn’t booked but a table was quickly found for me. Staff were lovely from going in to leaving. Although solo, was made to feel comfortable. Staff young and attentive.… read more Food good and reasonably priced . Opposite train station which was a plus. Although very busy, staff always on the ball. Very well managed. Will definitely come here again when next in Clitheroe. Well done all!
Average dining experience – Visited the establishment on Saturday the 19th, with my partner and daughter; having booked online.
Reservation process, was great.
Really straightforward.
Upon arrival the staff… read more were super professional and our table was reserved accordingly and we were seated immediately.
This always pleases me.
My daughter was given the best crayons/sharpened coloured pencils selection and paper, we’d ever received in any restaurant; so that was fab and appreciated.
Drinks order was prompt and efficient.
Drinks were spot on.
Table staff were brilliant, polite, professional and attentive.
Food order taken without incident;
Nachos starter was great.
Daughters cheese and tomato pizza was problematic for her to eat, as the topping just slipped off the base; this theme continued with my Piri piri chicken flatbread pizza. It was absolutely sodden and just a watery mess on the plate.
It wasn’t edible, as it was simply like cheesy slim on the bread.
The mini chicken fillets on the top were cooked well; and tasted lovely.
But the flatbread pizza itself, was really bad.
Not a good day for pizzas on our table.
My partners burger was fine.
We had a side order of onion rings; these were over cooked and just crispy batter. We left the bulk of them also.
If we’d just walked in off the street and had the poor meal, we’d have chalked it up to life’s lottery, sometimes you get a good place, sometimes, not so good, but frustratingly, we’d pre booked and were looking forward to our tea’s here and were massively underwhelmed after researching and reading up on great food places to eat in Clitheroe.
I spoke to one of the staff members and she remedied the situation by knocking two lime and lemonades off our total bill.
This was slightly frustrating, when I returned nearly the entire pizza, minus the chicken bits. I’d had less than a quarter of my first pizza slice when I returned it.
If I’d been the proprietor or staff member, when a customer returns nearly their entire meal, I’d remove that from the bill, not a couple of soft drinks.
Never mind, it was still a positive acknowledgement of the problem.
My partner did have a presecco too; but the bill still came to approx £55 and it wasn’t worth that.
Food was presented beautifully, but super average in actual taste and cooking.
We’ll definitely give them a second go, as we’ve bought a property locally, so will be back again, when hopefully we’ll receive a better culinary experience.
Good atmosphere; and for drinks, you couldn’t go wrong; jury’s still out on the food though. Hopefully next time we’ll have a better dining experience.
Regards.
During our visit to Clitheroe, we dropped in for morning coffee and cake which was well received. The staff were friendly and the cafe itself was well presented. Nice cafe… read more to call in for a pitstop. Recommended.
Celebrated a Birthday here for my daughter & the manager couldn’t do enugh for us. Thank you for the fantastic hospitality and thoroughly enjoyable lunch. The vegan in our party… read more really appreciated the vegan menu too. We will be back.
Visited one sunny lunch time with limited time of only an hour. Greatest with a smile and shown to a table on the roof terrace. Ordered drinks immediately and as… read more they came a few minutes later ordered food. I have to say as someone with coeliac disease this place is amazing. So much choice. I have the chicken club sandwich on gluten free bread and it was amazing. Best sandwich I’ve had out and about for a long time. Service was really quick which meant myself and my partner were in and out within the hour, even had time for a quick look in Dawsons next door. A very well run establishment and would highly recommend.
